Amateur pups take on the big dogs
Vail, CO, Colorado
VAIL ” One unique aspect of the competition at the Teva Mountain Games is the opportunity for amateur bikers, boaters, climbers and runners to line up at the start and compete against many of the world-class professional athletes who will be in attendance. With the inaugural Diving Dog Challenge, sponsored by Purina, the opportunity to compete against the pros is not limited to the two-legged athletes. Canines of all breeds and sizes are invited to go the distance against eight of the sport’s top dogs starting at 4 p.m. on June 2 at Golden Peak.
“Dogs are a huge part of mountain culture and we’re honored to have some of the world’s best canine athletes competing here,” Joel Heath, event organizer, said. “I suspect, however, that some of our local dogs are going to give the pros a run for their money ” or dog treats.”
The competition for the Diving Dog Challenge is simple. Handlers throw a bumper or toy of their choice to encourage their dog to run off a 40-foot stage and jump into a 40-foot pool. The dog’s jump is measured for distance based on where the dog’s nose is when its chest enters the water.
The top eight jumpers from the qualifying round will go up against eight professional dogs that travel the country with the event. Online registration is available at http://www.tevamountaingames.com. The field is limited to the first 75 dogs that sign up.
