VAIL -Team American Airlines Domestic arrived at all of their gates on time Saturday afternoon as Sweden’s Ylva Nowen led her team to the top step of the podium in the Ford Cup celebrity team race on Vail Mountain. The Ford Cup brought down the curtain on the racing portion of the American Ski Classic at Vail Mountain’s Golden Peak.

“It was truly a great week of racing,” said Michael Imhof, vice president of sales and operations for the Vail Valley Foundation, “and to watch Team American Airlines Domestic go for the gold was extremely enjoyable and well deserved.”

Comprised of Misha Moritz, Kaia Moritz, Randi Jaerbyn and Jon-Erik Borgen, Team American Airlines Domestic managed to split their four head-to-head races with silver medal winners Team Hertz to hand the controls to Nowen in the final race of the day against Hertz team captain, five-time Olympian Casey Puckett.

Getting the benefit of a three-tenths of a second start advantage, Nowen, the 1998 World Cup Slalom champion, flew down the black course to claim the individual and team win by a mere eight-hundredths of a second over Puckett.

“It was a great day for the Borgen family,” said Vail Valley Foundation president Ceil Folz, referring to Erik Borgen, a member of the Vail Valley Foundation’s board of directors, and the fact that Team American Airlines contained his son-in-law (Misha Moritz), two daughters (Kaia Moritz and Randi Jaerbyn) and son (Jon-Erik Borgen). “They battle through some tough conditions on Friday to put them in position to do well and then really pulled out all the stops on Saturday to earn their gold medals.”

Silver medals were presented to Team Hertz, comprised of Bill Jackoboice, Jon Haerter, Colt McClelland, Bob Engleby and team captain Puckett.

En route to the gold medal matchup, Team American Airlines Domestic dispatched of Team Maui Jim and Vail Resorts Epic Pass, while Team Hertz knocked off Team Vail Marriott and Team Quark Expeditions North Pole.

In the battle for the bronze, it was Team Vail Resorts Epic Pass prevailing over the Quark Expeditions North Pole squad by the score of four victories to one. Led by Vail Resorts CEO Rob Katz and captained by 1984 Olympic Slalom silver medalist Steve Mahre, Team Vail Resorts Epic Pass also included Tom Hyde, Fiona Arnold and Bill Hybl, Jr., while the Quark Expeditions North Pole team was captained by Canadian Karen Stemmle and included Pat Shaw, Angela Phangsoa, Amanda Precourt and Tori Johnson.

A total of 35 five-member teams battled throughout pool action on the dual courses Friday and Saturday to earn a spot in the final round of eight to decide the medals. In addition to the final four teams, the quarterfinal brackets also included Team Vail Marriott, Team Volvo XC90, Team Quark Expeditions Antarctica and Team Maui Jim.

The 2010 American Ski Classic was a project of the Vail Valley Foundation. For additional information, visit http://www.vvf.org.
