America’s Uphill returns to Aspen
Vail, CO Colorado
ASPEN, Colorado ” There’s only a few days left to register for one of Aspen’s most athletic tests.
America’s Uphill on Aspen Mountain returns Saturday, March 15. Start time is 7 a.m. Registration is now open at the Ute Mountaineer in downtown Aspen or online at http://www.utemountaineer.com.
Attracting hundreds of racers each year, the event brings together snowshoers, competitors on nordic, telemark and Randonee gear, and those who tromp up the slopes in tennis shoes and traction devices. The 2.5-mile trek up Aspen Mountain boasts more than 3,200 feet of lung-busting vertical gain.
America’s Uphill is sponsored by the city of Aspen, Ute Mountaineer, the Aspen Skiing Co., Aspen Mountain Ski Patrol, Black Diamond and Kahtoola.
This year, the race is dedicated to Scott Edmondson and Fritz Stammberger. It was Edmondson’s vision that created the first America’s Uphill and spawned a whole genre of uphill racing in the Roaring Fork valley and beyond.
Edmondson was inspired by Stammberger’s awesome abilities in the mountains and originally dedicated the race to him, challenging the racers to beat the one-hour barrier on Aspen Mountain that Stammberger established in the 1960s.
Edmondson died last August of cancer.
