Amid controversy, CU to vote on president
DENVER, Colorado ” The University of Colorado regents are a few hours away from voting on whether to appoint Bruce Benson as president of the CU System.
The oilman and former Republican fundraiser was named the sole finalist by a search committee.
Critics have raised concerns over his background as a Republican activist and his career in the energy industry. They also point to his lack of an advanced degree.
Benson says he can help CU overcome a funding crisis. He chaired a $1 billion fundraising campaign for the school and successfully lobbied for a referendum giving universities more money.
Faculty at the flagship Boulder campus voted down a resolution supporting Benson. Student government passed a resolution asking him to withdraw.
