Be aware of your speed in Vail underpass area on I-70
VAIL — In anticipation of high volumes of summer travel, the Vail Police Department is announcing a partnership with the Colorado Department of Transportation and Kraemer North America to assist with speed enforcement as part of the Interstate 70 Vail underpass project.
A speed study was recently completed for the east- and westbound lanes of I-70 at the construction site. According to Vail Police Officer Mike Bindle, the average speed was approximately 50.2 mph. Approximately 15 percent of the vehicles were going 15 mph over the posted 45 mph speed limit signs.
Vail Police Chief Dwight Henninger has committed officers to speed enforcement in these areas when not engaged in other police activities between mile markers 175 and 176 eastbound, and westbound and eastbound lanes between mile markers 176 and 177. The purpose of the speed enforcement is to have zero serious injury crashes at the construction site.
The partnership will take place throughout the construction, which will continue through December of 2017. For questions about the speed enforcement, call Bindle at 970-479-2200.
