Gogi Abroad offers Peru trip for high schoolers this spring

EAGLE COUNTY — Gogi Abroad, a company run by former Vail Valley resident and Battle Mountain High School graduate Liz Jackson, is offering local high schoolers another service-based learning opportunity for high school with a trip to Peru in late April and early May. Home-schooled students and traditionally schooled students are welcome to participate in this opportunity.

Students will be immersed in a small town in the foothills of the Andes just outside the colonial city of Cusco. Participants will work in a Waldorf-inspired school high in the Andes. Oak Meadow-enrolled students will earn community service credit for the experience.

Making Connections

According to a release, students will make real connections as they work with warm and welcoming Peruvians to undertake an important service-learning project. The group will build adobe structures to create a future kindergarten classroom and will also have the opportunity to learn crafts in the Inca style. This experience immerses high school students in the Spanish language, connects them with a local Peruvian community and teaches them the history of ancient cultures. Students finish the program exploring the Sacred Valley, including Machu Picchu. No prior knowledge of Spanish is required.

“A service-learning based program abroad will change the way you see the world, yourself and others,” Jackson said. “You will see the world through a new cultural lens. The beauty of a trip like this is that as you change and expand your view of the world, you are simultaneously changing someone’s life for the better. Students that come back from volunteering abroad are inspired and empowered.”

The trip will be from April 26 to May 2. For more information, email Jackson, liz@gogiabroad.com or go to http://gogiabroad.com/our-programs/peru-service-learning/.
