Housing meeting set for Wednesday night in Vail
VAIL — The town of Vail is hosting a public follow-up meeting from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday to provide an overview on themes and ideas to be included in an update to the town’s Housing Strategic Plan. The gathering will be held in the Vail Town Council Chambers at the Vail Municipal Building, 75 S. Frontage Road. Light refreshments will be provided.
Employees, business owners, renters, prospective homebuyers and other community members interested in making an impact on expanding Vail’s housing opportunities, including the Chamonix development in West Vail, are encouraged to attend the session.
Facilitated by Alan Nazzaro, the town’s housing manager, and the Vail Local Housing Authority, Wednesday’s meeting will include a discussion of themes identified during a series of earlier focus groups attended by residents, business owners, real estate agents, housing developers, local organizations, large employers and hoteliers. These themes include:
• The do-nothing option is not a viable alternative.
• Need affordable housing for full-time residents.

• Need to better regulate short-term rentals (i.e., VRBO, airbnb).
• A dedicated funding source for housing is needed.
• Homes for family/full-time residents, and rentals for temporary workers are needed.
• Density is an option as long as it is done correctly and in the appropriate locations, able to accommodate it, i.e., close to transit, amenities, shopping, etc.
The purpose of the updated Housing Strategic Plan is to identify and prioritize strategic actions that should be taken to achieve the policy objectives prescribed in the plan. Specific recommendations, including a proposed schedule for implementation, will be outlined within a detailed action plan section of the plan update.
The need to update Vail’s housing plan has been triggered, in part, due to the increasing cost of housing and lack of availability of both affordable rental and for-sale homes. A first draft of the updated plan will be reviewed by the Town Council in July.
The updated plan will be used by the Housing Authority and the Vail Town Council as a guiding document to make critical decisions about next steps, funding sources and resource allocation during implementation over the next three to five years.
