Local plumbing firm earns Actively Green certification
November 6, 2016
VAIL — American Plumbing Heating and Solar, Inc. has earned the Actively Green 2017 eco-award certification from Sustainable Travel International and Walking Mountains Science Center. The company's "green team" will receive its award during a ceremony Wednesday at the Sonnenalp Hotel in Vail.
The Actively Green program was introduced to businesses in Eagle County area in advance of the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships. The internationally recognized program was developed with global nonprofit partner Sustainable Travel International as a way to unite communities and use tourism to achieve a balance between economic development, green growth, and protection of natural and cultural assets.
'We owe it to our children'
The Actively Green Sustainable Business Certification Program is part of a larger movement to create a culture of sustainability throughout the Vail Valley. More than 140 businesses have participated in the training, with 51 businesses, including American Plumbing Heating and Solar, currently certified and many more working toward certification.
"One direction that I have brought forth from my home is the introduction of water and energy saving products for the customers I service, American Plumbing Heating and Solar founder Mustafa Aydin said. "I believe we owe it to our children and our planet to be as efficient as possible, and a plumber has a responsibility to help."
"Our quick certification was accomplished in large part because (our company) had many of the programs already in place," American Plumbing Heating and Solar Green Team member Sam Kircher said. "For example, we already had bins set up in our shop to recycle pipe, cast iron and other metals. Now we measure and log it. A new, immediate energy saving project being undertaken by our firm is changing our shop and office lighting to LED. The energy assessment finds we can change our lighting and enjoy a payback by year three. We are satisfied with that rapid a return on our investment."
