AVON — Can Do Day is an annual campaign honoring Can Do MS founder and Olympic medalist skier Jimmie Heuga on his birthday, Monday, Sept. 22. On this day, Can Do MS supporters focus on what they can do, and then do it to inspire others and help raise awareness about multiple sclerosis. In conjunction with Heuga’s birthday, local restaurants are teaming up with Can Do MS to support A Can Do Day of Giving on Saturday.
For the second year, a variety of local restaurants will show what they can do by donating a percentage of their profits to Can Do MS to support its lifestyle empowerment programs. Restaurant owners hope the program will bring in new customers and give their regulars another reason to dine out while supporting a good cause. Restaurants donating 20 percent of their sales include Juniper, Old Forge Pizza and Yama Sushi. Restaurants donating 10 percent of their sales include, e|Town, Main St. Grill and Ticino.

To get involved with Can Do Day virtually, fans are invited to visit an interactive Photo Pledge gallery and submit a photo with a pledge on what they can do. On Monday, the person with the most votes for their Photo Pledge will win a 1964 Olympic poster autographed by Jimmie Heuga, Billy Kidd and Pepi Stiegler, vintage “Heuga Express” trucker hat, Can Do MS duffle bag and a $50 Trek Light Gear gift certificate.
At the time of his diagnosis, Jimmie Heuga was advised to avoid physical activity to preserve his health. Being a high-caliber athlete and rebelling against his prescribed sedentary lifestyle, Heuga began developing his own program of exercise, and his condition improved. He not only realized the power of exercise, nutrition, positive thinking and movement to enhance his life with MS, but more importantly, he realized that by focusing on what he could do rather than what he could not, he was able to go beyond perceived limitations to live his best life with MS.
