Vail Christian Academy welcomes four new staff members this year
EDWARDS — Vail Christian Academy recently announced the hiring of four new educators for the 2015-16 school year. Offering kindergarten through eighth grade, the school has added Suzanne Johnson for physical education and the expanding O2 Outdoor Education program; Karla Smith for third grade; Allison Hansen for fourth grade; and Kristen Hubler for fifth grade.
“We are thrilled to welcome this incredible group to our Vail Christian family,” said Beth Raitt, head of school. “Bringing Suzanne on staff to lead O2 Outdoor Education will evolve a program that is incomparable in our community. For our classrooms, Karla, Allison and Kristen bring great teaching experience and energy, along with their love of God and kids. ”
Johnson moved to the Vail Valley six years ago from Jackson, Missouri. She graduated from Southeast Missouri State University, majoring in K-12 physical education. Unique to Vail Christian Academy, the O2 Outdoor Education program teaches children how to live life outdoors and includes avalanche safety, rock climbing, hut trips, ski days, search and rescue, river safety, whitewater skills, first aid and outdoor survival.
Smith is a Texas native and graduate of Baylor University with a degree in education. She taught in Texas for seven years and has been a substitute teacher for many years, both in Dallas and at Vail Christian Academy. Smith has also completed coursework in the master’s of counseling program at Amberton University.
Hansen grew up in Saratoga Springs, New York, and graduated college from National Louis University in Wheaton, Illinois, with a degree in elementary education. She has lived in the Vail Valley for the past 10 years with husband Chad and twin boys Wyatt and Jaxon. Allison has 10 years of experience teaching second, fourth and fifth grade and art. She is the Girls on the Run county coordinator for Eagle County and the health and fitness coach at the Gypsum Recreation Center.
Hubler moves to the valley from central New Jersey. She is a recent graduate from Cairn University (formerly Philadelphia Biblical University), where she graduated with a degree in both Bible and early childhood education. She is a huge sports fan, especially volleyball and softball.
Vail Christian Academy will host an open house event Tuesday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. For more information, call Mindy Denissen at 970-306-0076 or email mdenissen@vailchristian academy.org.
