Answerland: Fences along I-70
Q. When returning from Denver and driving over Loveland Pass, at the very beginning you can look north across Interstate 70 and see large, fence-type structures near the peak of the mountain. What is their purpose?
A. Those structures are 10- to 12-foot snow fences made of timber and steel. The fences reduce the amount of snow on the downslope side that could potentially blow onto the roadway, creating drifts and other traffic hazards, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation.
