Answerland: Why are they moving dirt in Wolcott?

Melanie Wong
Vail, CO Colorado

If you look at Wolcott down by the valley floor, for two months they’ve been moving dirt like crazy, and everybody has been asking, “What’s going on?”

The Jouflas family is filling in some irrigation storage ponds on their property between I-70 and the Wolcott post office.

The permit to move about 50,000 yards of soil was issued on Jan. 11 and the project began a couple weeks ago, said County Communications Director Justin Finestone.

“The scope of the permit is to allow for the import of soil to fill the ponds, thus leveling the property,” he said.

So far the Jouflases have not filed for any permits to build on the land, so it will stay an empty lot for now.

The reporters at the Vail Daily will do their best to find answers to questions you might have about life in our fair valley.

Is a pothole on your street swallowing large dogs and small cars? We’ll try to find out when the repair crew is coming. Are people speeding in the local school zone? We’ll ask the local police what they can do. Is that building going up down the street really going to be another Starbucks? We’ll see what we can find out.

E-mail your questions to newsroom@vaildaily.com, and we’ll get right on it.
