Argentinian wine tasting in Avon Wednesday

AVON – Avon restaurant and wine bar, vin48, is hosting a Argentinian focused wine tasting Wednesday. Vail Valley resident Cathy Cohn will lead a wine tasting from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in the restaurant’s wine bar. Cohn will pour four wines from the Vine Connections portfolio

“In 1999 we pioneered the first nationally imported portfolio of artisan wines from Argentina,” according to Vine Connections website. “Soon after, we introduced Americans to a selection of premium Japanese ginjo sake from family-run brewers. Years later, we continue to be a specialist and leader in these two regions, sourcing wines and sake that consistently over deliver value while providing education to our customers who sell, serve, and enjoy these amazing fermentations.”

Argentina stretches over 1 million square miles or about four times the size of France. The wide range of landscapes – the steep elevations of Salta, the majestic Andes in Mendoza, and endless plains of Patagonia – offer many ideal locations for grape growing. So it is no wonder that Argentina is the world’s fifth largest wine producer, ranking only behind France, Italy, Spain, and the U.S. Major exportation did not begin, however, until the 1990s when domestic consumption plummeted to only 35 liters per capita from 92 liters in the 1970s. During that same period, U.S. wine consumption almost doubled and many higher quality Argentine wines found their way to the U.S. and Europe.



Attitudes toward vineyard management and winemaking have changed slowly, but there is now emerging a small cadre of winemakers, viticulturists and winery owners who have set their agendas around not only making the finest wines in Argentina, but also making wines that have the style and complexity to challenge the best in the world.

Every Wednesday, the restaurant will serve wines from visiting winemakers, importers and industry insiders, paired with chef/owner Charles Hays’ cuisine. All the wines served are available for purchase at discounted prices from Beaver Liquors in Avon.
