VAIL — Come back to the roots of your yoga practice. Ashtanga yoga is the traditional practice that led to all modern forms of vinyasa and power yoga. Called “yoga therapy,” the primary series is designed to cultivate grounding energy and create physical health, while calming and focusing the mind.

Aria Athletic Club & Spa will host a practice titled Ashtanga Yoga: The Primary Series from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. This two-hour yoga class taught by Karen Anderson promotes stress reduction and optimal health.

“The Ashtanga primary series is a fantastic practice for centering the mind, while getting strong and grounded,” Anderson said.

Anderson has been teaching yoga in Vail since 1999 and is a longtime student of Richard Freeman, one of the foremost Ashtanga instructors in the world. In Freeman’s tradition, Anderson teaches with a focus on breathing and internal alignment. The primary series is a physically challenging vinyasa yoga practice and is not for complete beginners.

“Practicing the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series gives me a sense of being whole and connected,” said Libby Maio, Aria yoga supervisor. “I love the sweat, the physical challenge and the movement energy. After practice, I feel strong, balanced and healthy. I know I did something good.”
