EDWARDS, Colorado ” Arrowhead residents passed a ballot measure to issue $9.5 million in bonds in order to buy a 5-acre skier parking lot owned by Vail Resorts.

The vote to authorize the tax increase, passed 110 votes to 72 votes, said Cheri Curtis of the Arrowhead Metro District.

Earlier this year, Vail Resorts had planned to build an 80-unit condo complex on the site The project would have an underground parking structure, a community pool and outdoor fireplaces, said Michael Brekka, vice-president of Vail Resorts Development.

However, the lot has been used as free skier parking, and some residents were worried those spots would be lost if the project is built.

Metro district accountant Ken Marchetti said the plan is for the metro district to buy the parking lot to preserve it as it is. The district has not yet discussed the purchase with Vail Resorts, he said.

“The plan is to keep it skier parking, but I don’t know if it will remain free. That hasn’t been decided,” he said.
