Dan Young was born in Denver, and grew up in western Colorado. Working in the plein-air tradition, Young spends about 50 percent of his time painting on location, capturing the rural life of the West in scenes of the ranches that dot the mountain valleys and river bottom.
Primarily a landscape painter, he likes to introduce hints of man’s presence in the landscapes.
“Sometimes I feel I’m in a race to paint a disappearing way of life,” he said. “It’s hard to watch so many of the family farms and ranches being swallowed up by development.”
Young will be painting outside Paderewski Fine Art gallery in Beaver Creek on Saturday, Sept. 2, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Artist at heart
Young’s work was recently featured in Art & Architecture magazine. In it, he talks about how he always wanted to be an artist.
After college, he decided to go the commercial route as he puts it,“so I could draw every day and get a paycheck”. After several years in Texas working for large firms, he decided to come back to Colorado and paint full time.
In the beginning, his paintings were emotionless versions of places he’d had strong feelings toward since childhood. He gained a new set of skills, guidance from Michael Lynch and started painting on location. This was the beginning of a beautiful relationship.
Paderewski Fine Art is located in Beaver Creek, on the Plaza level of the Hyatt, across from the ice rink. Call 970-949-6036 or visit http://www.paderewskifineart.com for more information.
