Askimbo toots some funky horns
Bearing influences, including Miles Davis, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, Frank Zappa and Thelonius Monk, Askimbo has gathered a following on the Denver scene.
Askimbo blends jazz, blues and latin music under a funk groove.
The band has a slew of members who play in smaller groups for side projects and shows, including singer and trombonist Howard Bridges II, guitarist Geoff Orwiler, saxophonist Candra Rios, Anthony Aleman on harmonica and vocals, James Romine on timbales, Dave Simpkins on bass, John Simpkins on trumpet and Zach West and Brian Feist on the drums.
They have a large base of originals to choose from, as well as a sturdy list of covers, including Davis’s “Freddy the Freeloader,” Bob Marley’s “Lively Up Yourself,” Johnson’s “Me and the Devil Blues” and Snoop Dog’s “Lodi Dodi.”
Askimbo won the Red Rocks 60th Anniversary Battle of the Bands and placed second in the Post News/Jack Daniels Battle of the Bands at the Soiled Dove in Denver.
Askimbo plays Chili Willy’s for the Live! in Minturn series today at 9 p.m.
