Aspen-area bear hunting licenses still available
ASPEN, Colorado – The Colorado Division of Wildlife says that as of Friday, about 200 bear licenses were still available to hunters for an area stretching from north of Vail, west to Glenwood Springs and south to Aspen.
The division made 1,035 licenses available for the area this fall, up from 630 last year, to help manage a bruin population that may be getting too big for the habitat to support.
Last year, 630 licenses were available and hunters killed 33 bears. Historically, bear hunters in the area are about 5 percent successful.
Division of Wildlife spokesman Randy Hampton says the increased number of licenses could lead to fewer bears looking for food in homes around Aspen, but that wasn’t the main intent of making more licenses available.
