GLENWOOD SPRINGS – A Glenwood Springs man has been arrested and charged with sexual assault on a child, based on allegations that he fondled two young Carbondale girls on different occasions.Police from Carbondale and Glenwood arrested the man, Tomas Gregory (also known as Tomas Brown), 53, at his home in Glenwood Springs Friday. He was taken to the Garfield County Jail, but released the following day after paying a bond of $20,000.Gregory, who writes the popular “Aspen Astrologer” column in the Aspen Times, is due in Garfield County District Court on May 25. An arrest warrant affidavit contained no information about what else he does for a living, and Gregory declined to speak with a reporter when contacted at his home and asked for a comment about the case.”I’ve been advised not to (comment),” he said.According to an affidavit for an arrest warrant, Gregory, who is from Australia, has known the family of the two girls for several years, and had visited their home frequently.Based on an interview with the two girls, whose identities are being withheld, Gregory would watch television with the girls, and recently began to give them massages and occasionally visit them in their bedrooms. In an interview, the eldest girl told a psychotherapist and a police officer that Gregory would tickle her and her sister, and massage their backs, and had sometimes put his hands under their shirts to massage their stomachs. He also is accused of touching at least one of the girls on her buttocks, but through her clothes. He reportedly told one of the girls that he had “a crush” on her, and called the two of them “yummy.” He also reportedly told them not to tell anyone about what happened between them, or they would “have bad karma,” and that he would probably lose his job and have to move away. The mother of the two girls, whose identity also is not being disclosed to protect the identity of the girls, at one point grew “suspicious” of Gregory’s attentions to the girls and confronted him about it. Gregory’s response, however, soothed her suspicions, and the visits were allowed to continue. But during a visit on April 30, after the girls’ mother had gone to bed, Gregory and the older of the two girls, who is 13, stayed up to watch television. Gregory reportedly began giving the girl a massage, and she became more anxious about her relationship with the columnist. She later told her boyfriend, who urged her to tell her mother. Her mother then took her to see a psychotherapist, where the story came out, according to the affidavit. The psychotherapist then contacted the Carbondale Police Department, and after interviews with detective Dan Brown, Gregory was arrested.Gregory has for some time written a popular astrology column for The Aspen Times, owned by Colorado Mountain News Media, the parent company of the Vail Daily.
