ASPEN, Colorado ” The Aspen, Colorado city government is providing more than $20,000 in seed money to make Aspen an even more colorful place than it already is.

The city is doling out up to $200 to individual businesses and nonprofits to plant flowers in front of their stores and offices. The total budget for the city’s summer beautification program is $2,000, said Jeff Woods, manager of the city’s parks and recreation department.

That’s in addition to the $18,000 spent each year on flower beds and hanging baskets located throughout the downtown core.

“It’s just a way of furthering the beautification of our town,” Woods said, adding he’s been told by tourists and locals that they appreciate the effort. “It’s an additional layer of color in our community.”

There will be a big push within the next two weeks to plant flowers throughout town.

“Our goal is to get done before Food and Wine [Magazine Classic at Aspen, held June 19-21],” Woods said.

The beautification program for businesses is in its fifth year and was introduced by former Mayor Helen Klanderud, Woods said.

Businesses seeking financial assistance won’t be asked to necessarily prove their neediness, but the criteria requires that they be located within the city, and funds can only be used to purchase flowers ” not benches, pots or other accessories.

The deadline to apply is June 12.

Applications are available at http://www.aspenrecreation.com under “Parks Dept. News,” and may also be picked up at City Hall or the Wheeler Opera House. Call 920-5120 for more information, or e-mail karenk@ci.aspen.co.us.
