Aspen man arrested on heroin charges

ASPEN, Colorado ” A local man faces charges connected to heroin distribution following an investigation into the March overdose of man in Aspen.
Aspen resident Ryan Welgos, 30, along with Nelson Raul-Gamez, 24, of Aurora, were arrested June 19, according to a press release issued Wednesday by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The two have been charged with conspiracy to distribute a schedule II substance, distribution of a schedule II substance, possession of a schedule II controlled substance with intent to distribute, and possession a schedule II controlled substance.
According to the press release, the DEA had been investigating several heroin overdoses in Aspen. The probe was spurred by the March 23 death of Adam Peterson.
“DEA agents were able to identify the source of heron ingested by Adam Peterson as Aspen resident Ryan Welgos,” the press release states.
The DEA, along with the Two Rivers Drug Enforcement Team, launched an undercover investigation, subsequently learning that Raul-Gamez had sold 15 grams of heroin to Welgos, according to the press release.
The agencies confiscated approximately 25 grams of heroin as part of the investigation, the press release said.
Jeffrey D. Sweetin, the special agent who heads the Denver office of the DEA, said in a statement: “For years a small but vocal group of Aspen residents have argued that drug enforcement ” and particularly DEA ” is not welcome in their city. Time after time they have said there is no drug problem there. But, as this tragedy demonstrates, drug distribution and abuse are present in Aspen.
