Aspen man identified from rafting accident

EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado – The man who died in Saturday’s rafting accident near Dowd Junction has been identified as William Spang, 48, of Aspen.

Spang’s body was recovered from the Eagle River shortly before noon Saturday.

Spang was rafting with two friends when the private raft pitched and overturned in Dowd Junction. The two friends were able to self rescue and called 911 for help. Spang was an experienced rafter and was wearing a personal floatation device.

The men were not affiliated with the Teva Mountain Games or a private rafting company.

The Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Vail Mountain Rescue Group, Avon Police Department, Minturn Police Department, Eagle River Fire Protection District, Vail Fire Department and the Eastern Eagle County Ambulance District assisted with the operations.
