Aspen police switch to hybrid SUVS
Vail, CO Colorado
ASPEN, Colorado ” The Aspen Police Department is switching its fleet of vehicles to hybrids.
The decision to use 10 hybrid Toyota Highlanders, complete with a full electrical police package of radio, emergency lights, radar, video and laptop computer, is a first in Colorado, city officials said.
“The reasons we are buying these are the same reasons many consumers can agree with,” said Police Chief Richard Pryor in a press release. “In Aspen today, gas is around $4.80 per gallon,”
“Switching to hybrid vehicles simply makes economic sense,” he said. “We wanted to do our part to reduce CO2 emissions, to reduce the fuel we use, as well as provide a fully-functioning police patrol vehicle.”
A mid-size, four-wheel-drive SUV, the Highlander hybrid is classified as a “Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle,” yet generates a potent 268 horsepower.
