ASPEN, Colorado ” The city of Aspen wants the scoop on dog poop.

By holding a poetry contest on canine feces, the city hopes to raise awareness about unclaimed dog poop in Aspen. In a survey conducted in October, Aspen residents deemed left-behind feces their biggest complaint about living here.

“We are hoping to get good poetry and cast a fresher light on a problem that requires awareness and personal responsibility,” said Brian Long, the city parks and open space ranger.

Submissions for the contest are due early July. All types of poetry are accepted.

“We talked about just doing Haikus,” Long said. “But we thought it would be more fun to open the contest up to more types of poetry including limericks, short poems and basically everything but Homeric epics.”

Contest winners will be announced July 4; they will receive a gift certificate and will have their entries published in The Aspen Times. All entries will appear on the city of Aspen’s website.

To participate in the contest, e-mail your submission to, or mail entries to the Aspen Parks Department, Attention Brian Long, 130 S. Galena St., Aspen, CO 81611. For more information, call (970) 319-0536.
