Aspen’s Red Brick highlights artists
The Red Brick Center for the Arts opened a group exhibition Thursday night. “From the Ground Up” features paintings, batiks, ceramics and photography by Western Slope artists Colleen Clare, Vera Mulder, Terry Shepherd and Lynn Smith.Aspen’s Dustin Lutomski attended Thursday’s opening. He was struck by Smith’s photographs, which focus on mundane objects from her unique point of view.”She makes excellent use of perspective and lighting,” Lutomski said. “Sometimes it’s hard to make out what the subject is until you read the caption.”Lutomski’s friend Erik Nelson was drawn to Clare’s plein-air paintings. Clare studied art with a realist painter before attending Vanderbilt University and traveling to Provence in France to explore the genre she’s chosen to feature in this month’s show. “She manages to simplify it but at the same time, it’s all still there – the lighting, the color,” Nelson said of Clare’s impressions of the landscape from Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park to Taos, N.M. Nearby scenes such as Mount Sopris feature heavily in the Basalt artist’s exhibits at the Red Brick Gallery.Mulder employs both vivid color and stark black-and-white contrasts in her fabric batiks, which impressed longtime Aspen resident Sharon Kahn.”The quality is really remarkable,” Kahn said.Grand Junction artist Terry Shepherd had a general interest in art when he began college. He intended to study archeology, but his classes sparked an interest in historical ceramics, clay in particular. Now, 90 percent of his work is clay, such as the vases, cups and plates on display at the Red Brick.Shepherd praised the venue as “available to artists who otherwise might not be showing in Aspen,” and he said the Red Brick’s selection committee brings in “some really mature art.”The artists’ works are for sale, and the exhibit is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays through the end of November. For more information, contact the Red Brick Gallery at 920-7477.Abigail Eagye’s e-mail address is firstname.lastname@example.org.
