The Telluride R-1 School District Board of Education has announced that it has unanimously selected Michael Gass, who is currently assistant superintendent for Eagle County Schools, to be the new Telluride superintendent of schools beginning on July 1. Gass was one of 29 applicants for the position and was chosen after interviews with the board and committees comprised of parents, teachers and community members.

Gass has been with Eagle County Schools since 2012. Gass, a native of Durango, and a graduate of University of Northern Colorado and Adams State University, has more than 26 years in public education, including over 20 with Eagle County Schools. Gass has been a classroom teacher, elementary school principal, the director of secondary education and executive director for student services within Eagle County Schools.

“Mike Gass is an experienced and talented educator. The students, parents and staff in the Eagle Valley schools know him to be a student-focused, innovative and dedicated educator,” said Paul Reich, president of the Telluride R-1 School District Board of Education. “Beyond being a tireless champion for kids, he brings to us a wealth of experience in school administration, and he was a key innovator in the Eagle Valley schools. We are excited to be able to offer Mike this opportunity in Telluride.”

“In addition, Mike has lived and worked in resort communities in Colorado his entire life. He understands the unique qualities of living in remote mountain communities with diverse populations,” Reich added.
