Assistant takes county attorney post

EAGLE COUNTY ” Eagle County’s incoming top legal counsel will be a familiar face.

The Board of County Commissioners has promoted Assistant County Attorney Bryan Treu to take over for departing County Attorney Diane Mauriello. Mauriello announced last week that she would be resigning her position of nearly three years at the end of August.

Treu will be the fourth director of the county attorney’s department in five years. He has been with the county since 2001.

The county attorney represents the board of commissioners on all legal matters, prepares legal contracts and handles lawsuits by and against the county.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to serve the Board of County Commissioners and the citizens of Eagle County in this new role,” Treu said in a statement. “I have had the pleasure of practicing law with Diane Mauriello for the past four years and will do my best to live up to the high standards she has set for the office.”

Mauriello, who said she resigned to spend more time with family, said Treu was up for the challenge. When Eagle County’s human resources director resigned, Treu took up the responsibility until a replacement could be hired.

“I am pleased to see that the board appointed Bryan as county attorney,” Mauriello said in a statement. “Bryan is an asset to the county and I know he will serve the board effectively.”

Treu graduated magna cum laude from Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. and is a 1996 graduate of the University of Colorado School of Law. Prior to coming to Eagle County, Treu was an attorney for Larimer County.

Commissioner Peter Runyon said Treu will make a “seamless transition” into the new role, which he’ll officially take Sept. 1.

Treu lives in the Eby Creek neighborhood near Eagle with his wife, Janine, who is an associate attorney with the Denver firm Litvak, Litvak, Mehrtens and Epstein.

The couple have a 2-year-old son and are expecting a second son in September.
