Auditions for Eagle County theater shows set for June
EAGLE COUNTY, Colorado –Ann Olin wanted to tackle a Shakespeare play ever since she got involved with the downvalley theater group Porchlight Players a few years ago.
This summer she’ll do just that. The group plans to stage Shakespeare’s classic play “Comedy of Errors” in mid-August.
“I read ‘Comedy of Errors’ and I thought it would be perfect for our first foray into Shakespeare,” said Olin, who is president of the Porchlight Players’ board of directors.
The play is among three shows the theater group plans for the summer and fall.
“Comedy of Errors” is about two sets of twins who were separated at birth in a storm and wind up living in the same town as adults.
Also on tap is “Godspell,” a musical retelling of Jesus’ parables.
“The main reason I chose it was because the music is so fantastic,” said the show’s director, former professional actor and Eagle resident Lance Schober.
Along with “Godspell,” the theater group plans to stage Neil Simon’s “Barefoot in the Park,” a comedy about two newlyweds who learn how to coexist despite their different personalities.
“It’s a great story of an uptight lawyer husband and a free spirit let’s-try-everything-once-and-if-we-like-it-try-it-twice kind of person, and how their marriage goes from the honeymoon stage to learning how to live together with very different personalities,” Olin said.
Auditions for all three shows will be held in early June. Porchlight Players seeks adult community members to fill about 30 roles.
Schober said the Porchlight Players is a great venue for people who are new to theater.
“I really want to encourage people, especially if it’s their first time, to come out and try it,” he said. “You never know who’s going to try out at an audition. We may find a diamond in the rough who has a great voice but has never sang in front of people before.”
Porchlight Players is a community theater group for children and adults based in Eagle and Gypsum. About 100 community members have either starred in shows or participated in a children’s theater camp over the years.
Porchlight Players formed in 2005 when a group of people in western Eagle County set out to make live theater more accessible for downvalley actors, Olin said.
“We thought it would be nice to be able to bring the experience of live shows and live theater down to the Eagle and Gypsum area, and make them either really low cost or free,” she said.
