Aurora girls found OK; dad dies after shooting self
AURORA, Colorado ” Police say a man shot and killed himself in front of his two young daughters hours after the girls’ mother was found dead in the east Denver suburb of Aurora.
Authorities said the girls were not injured.
Brian Carl Patterson, 38, shot himself late Tuesday after he was pulled over by state troopers in the north Denver suburb of Thornton. Police and the FBI used an anti-theft tracking device in his vehicle to find him, Aurora police detective Shannon Lucy said.
He died about an hour later at a hospital of a single gunshot wound to the head.
Police said Patterson’s daughters, 4-year-old Brianna and 3-year-old Aliyah, were in the car. An Amber Alert had been issued and a search was launched for the girls earlier Tuesday after their mother, 39-year-old Pamela Patterson, was found dead at the family’s home.
Pamela Patterson died of multiple gunshot wounds, and her death has been ruled a homicide, the Arapahoe County coroner’s office said Wednesday.
Public records show Pamela Patterson had filed for divorce from Brian Patterson in January.
Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said investigators believe Brian Patterson struck his estranged wife during an argument on Monday. A warrant was issued for Brian Patterson Tuesday night on suspicion of domestic violence and assault.
The Amber Alert from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said Brian Patterson had a history of domestic violence and was a person of interest in the woman’s death.
Lucy said police will continue to investigate the case but don’t expect to make any arrests. She said Arapahoe County social services was overseeing Brianna and Aliyah’s placement with family members.
