Avon asks residents to take care of garbage

Vail Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado

AVON – The Avon Police Department is seeking help from residents and visitors in protecting wildlife. Avon’s Wildlife Protection Ordinance requires responsible garbage disposal to discourage scavenging bears and other animals.

Bears have already re-emerged from hibernation, and residents are reminded to take steps to not attract bears by following the town law which requires that all residential trash containers must be wildlife resistant and latched, or kept in a fully enclosed and secured structure.

Trash containers cannot be placed curbside prior to 6 a.m. the day of pickup, unless the containers are latched, wildlife resistant containers, which may be placed at the curb the day before pickup.

All containers shall be removed from the curbside and re-secured before the end of the pickup day. All residential containers must be marked with a street address and unit number. All commercial containers (Dumpsters) must be secured, meaning lids must be closed and latched at all times.

It is against town law to intentionally or unintentionally provide food for wildlife. For more information, call the Avon Police Department at 970-478-4040.
