AVON — The Avon Summer Carnival brings fun, games and funnel cakes to town each summer. It takes place today through Sunday and is located east of City Market in Avon. Unlimited ride passes are $20 in advance and are available at the Avon Police Department, Vail Police Department, Bright Future Foundation in Avon, Marko’s Pizza in Edwards and the Samaritan Center in Edwards.
A portion of the proceeds from the carnival benefit local nonprofits. This year’s beneficiaries are Battle Mountain High School’s Future Business Leaders of America, Bright Future Foundation’s Buddy Mentors Program and Samaritan Center of the Rockies.
Funds from last year’s carnival enabled local students to attend FBLA National Leadership Conferences around the U.S.
“Twenty students were able to travel to Washington, D.C.,” said Nancy Lindbloom, Battle Mountain business teacher. “In addition to monetary assistance, the members learn and practice real-world business skills while marketing and promoting the carnival each May. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to earn funds each year.”
The Samaritan Center of the Rockies, based in Edwards, offers support and counseling for families, individuals and youth. Bright Future’s Buddy Mentors matches up local youth with adult mentors for a year-long commitment. The program strives to inspire and foster youth through building consistent and trusting relationships with adults. Unfortunately, there is a wait list for Junior Buddies who want to take part in the Buddy Mentors Program due to a shortage of Senior Buddies.
“With this generous donation we’ll work to recruit adult mentors to take on the rewarding challenge of mentoring any of the 30 youth on our wait list,” said Drew Kartos, youth violence prevention specialist with the Bright Future Foundation.
“Thanks to sponsors like Traer Creek and Beaver Creek Resort Co., we can bring a family-friendly, fun event to town every summer,” said Eagle-Vail Metropolitan District Community Manager Jeff Layman.
Additional sponsors include the Vail Daily, KZYR and Vail Honeywagon.
