Avon finally gettinga Main Street

AVON – Avon is looking to make its Main Street the best in any town, say town manage Larry Brooks. But don’t go looking for Main St. just yet, because it simply doesn’t exist. “It’s not there yet,” said Jacquie Halburnt, assistant town manager. What now passes for Main Street – Avon Road – serves an the main access from I-70 to Beaver Creek Ski resort. The new Main Street will be built along what now is a pedestrian sidewalk that runs north of the Seasons building and ends at the Avon Recreation Center. It will begin at the last roundabout north of Bob the Bridge.”The redesign of that area has some good potential for the town,” Brooks said.Brooks and Halburnt are not the only ones who will have the opportunity to express their opinion about what needs to be done with Main Street. The town is planning a community workshop Wednesday evening for residents to add ideas to the design. The results of that meeting and other meetings will be presented at an open house Friday. As envisioned, Main Street will be a vibrant area with storefronts that extend into Avon parkland. It will accommodate both pedestrians and vehicles but will be closed to vehicles when special events will be held, Brooks said. It’s going to take five to 10 years for Main Street to be completed, It will connect with two new streets crossing the railroad tracks to the new Westin Riverfront Resort planned on riverside land to the south. ==========================================See the siteswww.avonmainstreet.com==========================================Making Main StreetWhat: Avon holding a community workshop on a design for Main StreetWhen: 6 p.m., WednesdayWhere: Town Hall council chambersWhat else: Main Street open houseWhen: 4:30 p.m., FridayWhere: Town Hall council chambers ==========================================Staff Writer Cliff Thompson can be reached at 949-0555, ext. 450, or cthompson@vaildaily.com.Vail, Colo.
