Avon holiday lighting contest underway

AVON – The town is again a holiday lighting contest meant to encourage businesses and residents to decorate their storefronts and homes. The town turned on its holiday lights Thanksgiving week. Members of the town council will judge homes and businesses on Dec. 19. Winners will be announced immediately and awards will be presented at the first council meeting of the new year, on Jan. 10.Awards will be presented in eight categories: Avon commercial, Avon core residential, Wildridge residential, best apartment complex, best animation, best multi-media, best “meaning of the holidays,” and best team/multi-family dwelling unit.Three places will be awarded for each category. First Place will receive a $75 gift certificate to an Avon restaurant. Second and third place winners will receive a $50 and $25 gift certificate to an Avon restaurant.”The standard for judging this year will be higher,” Avon Mayor Ron Wolfe said. “The criteria for repeat winners should include enhancements from the prior year’s judging.
