Avon makes wider cuts
AVON, Colorado ” Avon, Colorado’s rec center won’t be open as many hours on Sundays, town workers will be furloughed and bus routes will be cut as Avon makes another round of spending cuts.
Starting in May, the rec center will be open from noon to 7 p.m. on Sundays, but it will be closed for spring cleaning from May 3 to 9.
“Our Sunday hours have historically been our slowest and therefore are more heavily subsidized by the town,” said Meryl Jacobs, director of recreation and cultural services.
Starting April 13, the town will only run one bus route. Buses will cover all stops, but travel times may increase.
Town employees, except for police officers, will each have one unpaid day off a month beginning in May.

“We’ve already cut over 5 percent of expenditures from the 2009 budget and frozen a number of positions,” said Town Manager Larry Brooks. “With the disappointing data we’re receiving regarding tax revenues, we need to continue the belt tightening.”
