Avon moves ice skating to Nottingham Park field

Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado

AVON, Colorado – Due to unseasonably warm temperatures, the town of Avon will not be opening Nottingham Lake for ice skating this season. Rather, the activity will be moved to a newly created ice rink on Harry A. Nottingham Park athletic field. The new ice rink is expected to open as soon as weather permits.–

Crews are developing an alternative ice skating arena on the main athletic field in Nottingham Park by packing down the snow to create a foundation for the ice. Three consecutive days and nights of consistently cold temperatures below 32 degrees are needed to establish the first core layer of ice and to allow skating. The town asks the public to stay off the rink until it is opened for skating.

Ice formation on Nottingham Lake is being made difficult this year by warm temperatures and the insulating effect of the early-season snow. In addition, a puncture in the lake’s lining is causing fluctuating water levels and unsupported ice. There will be no skating on Nottingham Lake this year, and the public is asked to not walk on any part of the lake.
