Avon planner leaving after 5 years

Ruth Borne has resigned her position as the Avon’s community development director after serving five years with the town. Borne’s last day will be Friday.

“It’s been five years in community development,” she said. “It’s just time to move on and go back to practicing law and spend some time with my kids.”

She has accepted a job as the in-house attorney for Marcin Engineering, a civil engineering and surveying firm that is working on the Miller Ranch and Eagle Ranch developments. She also plans to do private consulting on the side.

Borne, who has a law degree and is licensed in Florida and Colorado, said she has practiced law on and off for the past 10 years.

Borne was a key part of the town’s approval of both the Village at Avon development – which includes the Wal-Mart Supercenter and The Home Depot – and the Sheridan Mountain Vista complex across from the post office, said Town Manager Larry Brooks.

“She is a licensed attorney and with her pretty extensive experience in land use, I’m sure there is quite a bit of need for her skills out there in the private sector,” Brooks said.

The town still has plenty of projects on the table, including continued development of the Village at Avon and the development of the lot near the Seasons at Avon building. Proposed plans for that lot include condominiums and a new transportation center for Avon buses. If built as planned, the building could be the tallest in Avon. A nearby homeowner’s association has filed suit against the town for approving the project.

The town soon will begin advertising the community development director’s position.

“I think whenever you lose somebody in a position like that it takes effort from everybody to fill in the gaps,” he said. “That position is one of the key people around the table on any of the larger things we consider.”

Borne said she will miss working with planning department staff the most.

“It’s been a great experience,” she said. “The hardest part is leaving the staff.”
