Avon police chief selected as next Cheyenne chief

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – Cheyenne’s mayor has nominated the Avon, Colo., police chief to become Cheyenne’s new police chief.

Mayor Rick Kaysen announced on Wednesday that Brian Kozak is his choice to fill the vacancy left by former Chief Bob Fecht’s retirement in August.

The City Council is scheduled to consider Kozak’s nomination on Jan. 11. If approved, Kozak would take the department reins on March 1.

In addition to three years as Avon’s chief, Kozak’s experience includes 22 years with the Mesa, Ariz., police department.

Kozak was selected from among four candidates, including two internal candidates.

He says one of his first initiatives in Cheyenne will be to install a system to hold department leadership accountable for crime rates.
