Avon Police Department gets federal grant
The Avon Police received a $14,444 grant under the American Recovery Act to buy a portable digital fingerprint system. Lt. Greg Daly applied for the grant to buy the equipment, which will help the Avon Police Department identify illegal aliens who have been previously deported. Police officers will also use the system to fingerprint criminals and check for arrest warrants.
Sgt. Jonathan Lovins also received a grant for two police patrol bicycles that the department used for the first time at the Salute to the USA Fourth of July event.
The Avon Police Department has three more grant applications in the works for community-oriented police funds, an undercover camera for surveillance operations and a security door, counter and camera system for the new live scan fingerprint system.
