Avon Police seek participants for citizen’s academy
AVON, Colorado – The Avon Police Department is accepting application for its second annual Citizen’s Police Academy, which will begin in September. The application deadline is Aug. 25. The academy is designed to open the lines of communication between the community and the Police Department. The goal is to educate the public about the Avon Police Department’s role in the community and to increase the rapport between citizens and police officers.
Academy participants can expect to gain a firsthand understanding of the Avon Police Department and the regulations and protocol officers follow. Participants are instructed by Avon police officers, and all training takes place in a safe and entertaining environment. Participants graduate with a greater understanding of the police mission and with increased ability to see how the police serve the community.
The academy will be every Wednesday during the month of September starting Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. There will be five classes during the month with the possibility of a field trip to Eagle County Jail. Possible topics of discussion are: Krav self defense, state of the police department, crime in Avon, DRE drug identification, DUI enforcement, patrol procedures, SWAT procedures, use of force, and verbal judo. Participants will receive a certification of completion upon graduation from the academy.
The Avon Citizen’s Academy will hold a maximum of 20 students, all of whom are subject to a background investigation. Due to the subject matter, participants must be 18 years of age and older, live, work or volunteer in the town of Avon, have no felony convictions, no significant or recent misdemeanor convictions and willing to complete a waiver of liability.-
