Avon police win safety awards

AVON, Colorado ” The Avon Police Department’s traffic safety initiatives were recently recognized by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

Officer Yvonne Ramirez received a Traffic Safety Hero award for her efforts in DUI prevention and enforcement. She was the only police officer from the Eagle County region to receive this honor. Ramirez was also recognized for being one of the first Avon officers to become internationally certified as a Drug Recognition Expert.

In addition, the Avon Police Department was recognized for starting the Gore Range DUI Taskforce to intensify DUI enforcement. The task force is made up of all the law enforcement agencies in Eagle County.

“Progress cannot be made through enforcement alone,” Avon Police Chief Brian Kozak said the state’s annual Traffic Safety Hero awards luncheon. “The task force has to have support from the community and local business if we are to reduce this violent crime of DUI.”

The Avon Police Department was awarded a $3,700 laser speed measuring device, by the Colorado Department of Transportation. The device can measure the distance between two vehicles, making it possible to enforce the tailgating laws.
