Avon talks transit with commissioners

Lauren Glendenning
Avon, CO Colorado

The issue: The future of transportation in Avon, Colorado and Beaver Creek

Who they talked to: Larry Brooks, Avon town manager; Tony O’Rourke, Beaver Creek Resort Company executive director

What they talked about: The town and the Beaver Creek Resort Company agreed to fund a survey sometime in the next couple of months that should determine if Avon citizens would support a ballot question asking them to fund more transportation and summertime marketing. If the survey indicates citizens’ support, Brooks said the town would have to certify a question by early August to get it on the November ballot.

Who they talked to: Eagle County Commissioners John Stavney, Sara Fisher and Peter Runyon.

What they talked about: Eagle County commissioners and town council members talked about a variety of problems facing both agencies, including transportation funding and budget cuts that affect town and county services. Runyon talked about the idea of forming an independent transit authority that would oversee the county and the towns. Both commissioners and town council members agreed that some kind of transportation summit should be organized to see where transportation needs to be in 10, 20, 30 years and beyond.
