Avon’s Nottingham Lake closed for ice skating

Daily staff report
Vail, CO Colorado

AVON, Colorado – Nottingham Lake is closed for ice skating due to unsafe ice. The lake ice is unstable and thin due to unseasonably warmer temperatures, insulating early-season snow and reduced water levels. It is unlikely that Nottingham Lake will open this winter for ice skating; rather, a new ice rink is being built on Nottingham Park athletic field for ice-related activities.–

The town has posted signs and erected fencing along the lake, and the Avon Police Department will provide increased patrols to warn people against walking on the ice.—

One factor contributing to the unsafe ice is declining water levels caused by a puncture in the lake’s lining. The lake liner was punctured during construction of the Fishing Is Fun Pier. Water levels in the lake are down and will be lowered further to prevent additional damage to the liner and sub-surface soils. The town hired a diver to investigate the damage and attempt to make repairs but the effort proved unsuccessful. Repairs to the liner will now be made in the spring.-
