Avon’s Stone Creek Charter excels in math

AVON, Colorado – Almost every grade level at Stone Creek Charter School scored better than the state average in math on this year’s Colorado State Assessment Program test.

Stone Creek Charter School in Avon announced its Colorado State Assessment Program results Friday. Jen Gutmann, the school’s interim principal, was happy with the results and said the school’s Core Knowledge curriculum is working.

The curriculum builds on education from year to year, so students build upon what they learned the year before rather than starting all over with completely new subjects or material.

Stone Creek focused on math in the 2008-09 school year and was able to move students into higher-grade-level textbooks, Gutmann said in a statement earlier this week. The success is due to the school’s math program, Saxon Math, and dedicated teachers, she said.

Stone Creek students in grades three through eight also scored better overall than Colorado state averages in reading and writing.
