Ballet gets boost in Beaver Creek
BEAVER CREEK ” The Loewensterns love dance.
Fortunately for us, they also love to share. Karen has known artistic director Michael Smuin for 40 years, so when Smuin Ballet from San Francisco came to perform at the International Dance Festival, Karen wanted to do something special.
“I have companies I fall in love with, and with whom I have a personal connection,” Karen Loewenstern said. “I want to see them shared with Vail, and for the people from this community have that experience.”
The Smuin Ballet was founded in 1994, and is known as one of the country’s most entertaining, original ballet troupes. This year, the troupe performed “Fly Me to the Moon,” choreographed by Smuin with music by Frank Sinatra.
Argie and Oscar Tang underwrote the event.
The Loewensterns opened their beautiful Beaver Creek home to friends and supporters of the dance for a chance to meet and chat with the dancers in Smuin’s troupe.
The party was held in their multi-tiered garden, which was in full bloom with local flowers. Mountain Catering provided the tantalizing dinner.
“The Loewnsterns have been so supportive of the group,” said Michael Smuin. We just finished our 11th year in the black, and we’re so happy to be here.”
While the Loewensterns lived in Northern California, they were involved with the San Jose Ballet. Many of the dancers they knew are now with Smuin’s group based out of San Francisco.
“We only steal from the best,” added Smuin, with a smile.
