SUMMIT COUNTY, Colorado – The Alpine Bank in Dillon was robbed Monday afternoon by a lone male, but officials are not sure if he is the same man who robbed the US Bank in Frisco earlier this month.

The suspect entered Alpine Bank at approximately 2:45 p.m. and handed a note to a bank teller demanding money and indicated he had a weapon. The suspect was given an undisclosed amount of money and fled the bank on foot. Officials are unsure whether the suspect entered a vehicle upon leaving the bank.

Police describe the suspect as a slender white male in his 20s, approximately 6 feet 1 inch to 6 feet 3 inches in height. He was wearing a black jacket, a gray hooded sweatshirt, a dark scarf and a black beanie at the time of the robbery. He also had a “slight growth of facial hair.”

Dillon Police worked with other area law enforcement to canvass the area for witnesses and evidence. Traffic to the interstate was “funneled” so that passengers in vehicles could be identified, Dillon Police Chief Joe Wray said. A dog was also deployed to track a scent lead. Dillon Valley Elementary school was put on temporary lockdown as police performed their investigation, but the students were released shortly thereafter and buses ran only slightly late, according to Summit County School District spokesperson Julie McCluskie.

Frisco Police Chief Tom Wickman confirmed the suspect from the US Bank robbery in Frisco was still at large, but did not know if the crimes were related.

“It is so unusual for this type of crime to occur in Summit County,” Wray said. “It’s more of an anomaly than anything, and I don’t see a trend occurring.”

Wray said a follow up investigation would be performed with the combined resources of area law enforcement groups.
