Battle Mountain track second in Grand Junction
Saints' boys fifth in Glenwood
It’s not spring, but there’s spring in their step.
Battle Mountain girls track and field finished second at the Phil Wertman Invitational in Grand Junction on Friday.
With the caveat that the long-distance studettes were doing more interval work this week, it was interesting to see Sabrina Sutter and Emma Reeder go off in all things sprinting and jumping, or both simultaneously when it comes to the hurdles.
“It was fun to see them,” Huskies coach Rob Parish said. “We’re just getting both of those girls started. They both had long and successful seasons.”
On the boys’ side, Max Christenberry is turning into a Swiss army knife, very handy in a lot of situations. He won the discus and the shot put and finished second in the high jump. This all came a week after he broke Josh Henry’s long-standing school record in the discus.

“He just had a huge mental breakthrough,” Parish said. “He’s just been throwing it so well in practice and in competition.”
Lest we leave out all of Battle Mountain’s long-distance ladies, Grace Johnson broke her own record in the 3,200 meters one weekend ago with a time of 10 minutes, 47 seconds.
Meanwhile, 2A Vail Christian should probably pick on someone its own size. The Saints boys finished fifth at the Demon Invitational. Among 2A schools, they were only behind Paonia.
Eagle Valley was scheduled to be at Berthoud, but the meet was snowed out.
