VAIL ” Town crews have spent last week installing 70 new bear-proof trash cans in Vail Village and Lionshead ahead of the town’s April 15 deadline.

By that date all garbage cans in the town must be bear-proof. The town passed Wildlife Protection Ordinance after bears who had broken into homes were killed by wildlife officers. One bear attacked a woman inside her home in East Vail.

The town will spend $180,000 on bear-proof garbage cans.
