Bears spotted in Vail
Vail, CO Colorado
VAIL, Colorado ” Two bears have already been spotted in Vail, Colorado and the town is asking residents to keep garbage stored properly.
A bear was spotted March 5 on the 1400 block of Moraine Drive in the Sandstone/Lionsridge neighborhood and on March 28, bear tracks were reported in the 4800 block of Meadow Lane in East Vail.
Since 2007 all have been required to use wildlife-resistant containers. In addition, commercial establishments, multi-family complexes and construction sites are required to use enclosures and/or wildlife-proof containers. Also, trash can only be put on the curb during daylight hours on the day it is picked up.
Over the next few weeks, the Vail police department will increase enforcement of these laws. The town says the laws made for a peaceful season last year, with no reports of bears breaking into homes. Police received 42 percent fewer ball calls in 2008 compared to the last three years.
There have been 2 tickets and 69 warnings issued in Vail since Jan. 1. In 2008, there were 119 citations and 434 warnings.
