Beatles live on through Imagine
Vail, CO, Colorado
SILVERTHORNE ” Tom Coburn and Dan Burt had been incorporating Beatles covers into their gigs for years, and thought they did it pretty well.
That is until they got serious about covering the Fab Four, and really dissected the music.
Coburn plays the role of John Lennon and Burt of Ringo Starr in the Beatles tribute band Imagine.
“When we started pulling apart the music we realized what complex harmonies they put together,” Coburn said. “I consider that one of our strongest points, that we cover the parts verbatim. If people close their eyes they swear they are listening to a CD.”
Coburn and Burt started the band in the early ’90s auditioning for the roles of George Harrison and Paul McCartney. As luck would have it, the musician they wanted for Paul was a lefty.
“We’re really fortunate to have the musicianship we have in the band,” Coburn said.
The newly formed band dove into the music and spent six months rehearsing.
“The first few times I wanted to give up. I didn’t think I was going to get it, it was so complex,” Coburn said. But they eventually figured it out, and according to Coburn, “the proof is in the pudding.”
Their show begins with Beatlemania, then progresses through the Beatles career and several costume changes, eventually getting to the Sgt. Pepper stage.
“What we’re doing is putting on a tribute show with full costume and authentic instruments … we’re trying to capture the absolute essence of that period,” he said.
“It’s quite a comprehensive evening of music,” Coburn said.
Based out of Salt Lake City, Imagine has played more than 800 concerts and currently plays about 60 a year.
“The hardest part, I think for all of us, is to stay perfectly in Liverpool character.”
Imagine comes to the Silverthorne Pavilion on Thursday. Tickets are $18 at the door or $15 in advance.
