Winners of Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival’s “Picture the Music” contest were announced last week. The annual contest is an interdisciplinary education exercise that combines music and the visual arts, in which over 1,000 students from Eagle and Lake counties took part this year.

“The children who participate really seem to enjoy the experience of expressing what they hear on paper,” said Liz Campbell, the education coordinator for Bravo!. “They’re having fun while learning about a famous composer and his music.”

The contest is open students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Participants listened to “Ode to Joy” from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and created artwork based on their interpretation of the music.

Entries were judged on originality, creativity and musical interpretation. Teachers are given notes about the music and composer to share with the students.
